Square Arch House
Remuera, Auckland

Interview with Ron Sang and owner
An elevated site with a generous ten metre height limit provided the starting point for this striking design. Instead of viewing the steeply sloping site as a disadvantage, Sang Architects maximised its potential by planning from the top down and excavating the site to create a commanding four-level home.
Layout
The double-height 5m high red Sang Door and full-height glazing ensure the residence has a strong visual presence at street level.
A strong square arched form provides a sense of stability, with the arch repeated above the front door and in various areas throughout the house.
An opening aluminium louvre roof extends the living room into the outdoors, right up to the north boundary, providing the practical benefits of shade and weather protection but allowing the sun through when required. The adjacent pool allows you to swim right up to the breakfast room bay window.
Inside, the house is open plan on each level, with furniture dividing the space into formal and informal areas. Elements such as dark-stained oak fittings and light coloured floor finishes add warmth to the interior spaces and compliment the crisp lines of the kitchen and bathroom joinery and other interior details.
